Lasers are More Than a Sci-Fi Tool

A laser dentistry treatment

For any number of reasons, many people put off their dental check-ups, but one of the most important is that they are concerned about the care and the equipment used. In the past few decades, dental technology has come a long way, and there are now minimally invasive solutions that help patients feel less discomfort and have more positive outcomes. Laser dentistry in Fernandina Beach and Jacksonville Beach, FL  is one of these advanced tools that  Dr. Field uses at Darryl A. Field, DDS, PA Periodontics & Implant Dentistry.

Dental Technology

Dr. Field utilizes a Periolase® laser which emits soft light. While this laser appears to be a simple light, it is able to penetrate soft tissue to resolve complex dental issues. A gum disease treatment is one of the most common uses for such a laser by cleaning out bacteria that are hidden in pockets around the teeth.

The laser targets only diseased areas and leaves healthy areas alone, allowing a receding gum line to attach to the teeth once again.

It can also be used directly on tooth dentin to help control exposure to hot temperatures and cold ones. Exposed dentin is what gives the uncomfortable feeling around the teeth and our laser will treat the surface of the dentin to that sensitivity.

 Other Uses

Although the teeth are a common target for laser dentistry, there are other uses for it in a dental office as well:

  • Ulcers and cold sores
  • Frenectomy
  • Preparation for teeth impressions
  • Gum reshaping

Laser therapy for many patients is a perfect choice as it is almost painless and requires shorter downtimes. Since there are no treatment-related incisions, patients do not need to think about stitches and can get back to their normal lives quicker after a procedure.
